Gulf of Papagayo

The Fish
Sailfish
Caught throughout the year, May through August is normally the top season. Perhaps the most acrobatic of all blue water fish, the sailfish has engraved Costa Rica on every international angler’s wish list. This is fish is catch and release.
Roosterfish
Available all year, there are more caught in the Papagayo Gulf area with not so clear water. The roosters like the structure of the shoreline and islands where they’re found in 20 to 60 ft. It’s an inshore species often found in the rocks and beaches.
Red Snapper
There are many types of snapper. Cubera snapper, red snapper, to mention some of them. They live in the rock bottom where they find food and protection, some snappers, as cubera, are caught in the same way that roosterfish is, trolling with bait.
Wahoo Fish
This is a species that is captured usually in times of winter between the months of May to November, this is not a territorial fish and captured especially with water temperature clean and warm, it’s capture is given in the deep sea, and in the shores.
Amberjack
This species is deep water and fishing throughout the year, his capture is trolling as fishing roosterfish, but especially bottom fishing with live bait or using spoons or jig. Their size varies from 30 pounds to 150 pounds, also it a white flesh and good eating.
Bonita
Baitfish These fish are captured in the season of summer and they are top baitfish, bonitas belong to the same family of the tunas, and the average size is between 1 to 10 pounds. They swim cruising from 3-70 km/h. They are used as bait for roosterfish and bottom fish.
Marlin
This fish is from very deep water where its habitat is more than 500 feet, but by the months of June to December, (Winter season), they also come to the Gulf of Papagayo in search of food. Its weight usually around 500 pounds. They like very clean water.
Grouper
Grouper fishing occurs in the summer months, which is from December to March when the water temperature is cold because of ocean currents and winds. This species migrates from deep waters to the shallow, to warm up in warm waters.
Bigeye Jackfish
This type of fish is in shallow waters, also belongs to the family of the cock and usually fish are biting in large schools in the summertime for the season of March and April, it averages between 2 to 10 pounds, it provides good fight and eats for locals.
Guanacaste Sport Fishing Seasons
Winter season in Costa Rica is from May till Dic. and the conditions in the area of the Gulf of Papagayo usually is quiet, smooth with flat waves, green mountains, and good conditions for sport fishing in all area of Papagayo, allows the population of fish reproduces successfully and simultaneously feed during most of the year getting a population that does not diminish.
The marine currents that run through the Gulf of Papagayo from North to South, bring apart from plankton, a lot of trash from the rivers that run wild on the shores of Southern Costa Rica, fish are attracted collectively or in large colonies traveling in besides receiving current protection, food waste since it serves protection other smaller species that serve as food for larger ones that come from deeper waters to seek the shelter of the Gulf of Papagayo.
Some of these species are the dorado and sailfish. The latter comes in search of food as the golden or mahi-mahi, they come to finish growing up in the shallow waters of the Gulf. These come in groups of up to a thousand of them and they are easy prey sailfish and marlin among others.
Certainly, the Gulf of Papagayo is one of the best fishing areas in Costa Rica, during the winter there are good conditions for fishing and abundant fish such as sailfish, marlin, dorado, and wahoo are migratory species, but also is seasonal low for the national and international tourism which is the main engine of such activity.
Then there is the summer season ranging from December. Until May and is temperate of the trade winds coming from the North of Costa Rica and for which the temperature and visibility of the waters significantly lowered resulting in the activity of fishing groundfish such as snapper and grouper.
